Montgomery: A White Preacher's Memoir
Published in Paperback by Fortress Press (November, 1991)
Author: Robert S. Graetz
Average review score:

Defines living out Christian justice and mercy
Pastor Robert Graetz left seminary with his young family to take a call to Trinity Lutheran Church in Montgomery, Alabama. As a white pastor during the time of the civil rights activity in Montgomery, he writes of his day to day struggle with racial hatred and how it affected his congregation and his family. This book defines the courage it takes to live out Christian justice and mercy and added a dimension to my knowledge of this era I had not yet experienced before I read it. Although I rated it a 9, if someone did not return my copy, I would buy another. It is a must for my library.

A must have for all Mockingbird fans!!
While on a trip to the beach, I stopped off in Monroeville to visit the Mockingbird shrine. While there, I bought this book at the museum and was SO excited about the information that was found in it. There are so many similarities between the fictional Maycomb and the Monroeville in which Nelle Harper Lee grew up! For example, Monroeville, like Maycomb, had a strange citizen who got into trouble with the law when he was young and was locked up in his house by his father for years. This young man was never seen outside his house again and was considered a phantom by the town children, including Nelle Lee. The book will be a delight to all fans of the novel. I also strongly recommend a trip to Monroeville -- it will be well worth the time and effort for any true fan.

A wonderful history of a fascinating place
History changed in Montgomery, Alabama...from the birth of the modern Civil Rights movement to the great country music of Hank Williams. The social forces in this small Southern city impacted the way we live. Wayne Greenhaw has done a stellar job of painting that history with a graceful and easy style. Read and enjoy!

Monty: The Making of a General: 1887-1942
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill (September, 1981)
Author: Nigel Hamilton
Average review score:

A knife though granite
A superb and insightful study of the greatest Allied general of WWII and the century. I read it in great gulping chunks. Very interesting analysis of the psychosexual aspects of Monty and his relationship with his troops by one who knew him. A fascinating discussion of how in 9 weeks Monty turnded around a 200,000 man army from defeatism and slackness into one which secured the first convincing defensive and offensive battle wins by the Allied forces (principally New Zealand and Australian) against Rommel's hitherto invincible Africa Corps. I would recommend it for anyone interested in history, the military, human psychology and management.

Mose T's Slapout Family Album: Poems
Published in Hardcover by Black Belt Press (December, 1996)
Authors: Mose Tolliver, Julian Bond, and Robert Ely
Average review score:

Witty Robert Ely poems inspired by the great Mose T.
Paintings by Mose Tolliver, the key folk art painter from Alabama, who is one of America's greatest living treasures, inspired this gem of a book of poems by Robert Ely. The 8" 1/4-by 8 1/4" volume, published in Alabama by Black Belt Press, includes a brief introduction by Julian Bond. Twenty of Mose T's best known images are finely illustrated here in color, alongside the witty poems they inspired. Featured in the book are the fanciful inhabitants of the town of Slapout, among them the "Hoodoo Man...who learned his art from Kulba Khan," the "Jick-Jack Girl...who "kicks off her shoes when she begins to feel the blues" and "Mose t" himself, the artist who "paints pictures made with real paint...and many folks find them quaint."

New Jersey Ferns and Fern-Allies
Published in Hardcover by Rutgers University Press (November, 1992)
Authors: James D. Montgomery and David E. Fairbrothers
Average review score:

Great maps, good descriptions
This book covers every species of fern (and clubmoss and horsetail, that sort of thing) reported in New Jersey, with excellent maps showing exactly where. It also includes good pictures, brief descriptions of each species, range and habitat and lots of interesting comments. Great for finding out what might be in a given area, not as good for identifying a specific sample. Still, I really enjoyed it.
